Jack’s Speech Therapy – Week 5

Posted on: May 17, 2010

Today was our 5th week of speech therapy in a group setting. In the group is my Jack, 2 other boys, and 1 adult per child.
It is a lot to ask for 3 boys, aged 3-5 to behave every week for 1 hour, but so far so good for Jack. Sometimes he shifts his chair around, but over all he is really good. Today the other 2 boys were being really naughty and Jack just sat there so well behaved. He was getting a little frustrated when their antics meant he wasn’t getting his turn right away. The therapist said she could tell he was getting frustrated and thought he might say something to them, but he didn’t. He isn’t an outspoken child, well, unless you count with his younger brother. At the end of each session they get stickers, but today they were warned if they weren’t good they weren’t getting a sticker. I was quite concerned that Jack was going to join in on the antics because his favourite part of speech therapy is the sticker at the end. I knew I would have a fight on my hands if he didn’t get one. Well thankfully he was very good, and was the only one who got it. He was so proud of that.

At the end of the session, when she was passing out homework, she asked the other adults to continue working on the same things we have been working on. But for Jack she said he seems to have the concepts of where to put things in relations to other items, e.g. in front, beside, behind, on top, under, in etc. Which he didn’t get before. So, now we are to work on getting him to tell us where something is. This way he practices the speech, and answering questions.

Another item we are to work on is to get him to call the name of the person he is wishing to speak too. He generally doesn’t do that. He will just start talking, and you don’t know if it is to himself, his brother or you, if you aren’t right there. If he wants something from me, or his Dad he will say “Mommy/Daddy can I have….” But at the speech therapy he would just ask the air or whoever was looking at him for what he wants. If no one was making eye contact he would turn and ask me. So we need to work on that.

All in all I am proud of him, and he is making some great progress so far!
